Say Her Name: Honoring the Life of Decynthia Clements
April 11, 2018 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Join Black Lives Matter: Chicago, Assata’s Daughters, BYP 100, Love & Protect, People’s Response Team, Lifted Voices, and For the People Artists Collective for a vigil on Wednesday, April 11th at 6 pm at 400 N. Michigan to honor #DecynthiaClements on the eve of the one month anniversary of her killing by Lt. Christian Jansen of the Elgin Police Department.
Together we will mourn her death, lift up her memory, and demand justice in her name.
Decynthia, a 34 year old mother, was shot in the head as she stepped out of a burning car by officers who were supposedly there to assist her after finding her parked on the side of the highway, where she posed a danger to no one. The officers’ actions are consistent with how police respond to Black women in distress across the country – shoot instead of support.
As communities rise up in rage in the wake of the police killings of#StephonClark and #SaheedVassell, we lift up Decynthia’s life and death,#SayHerName, and call for accountability for Lt. Jensen and all police officers who take Black lives with impunity.
And, given that at least half of people killed by police were or were perceived to be in a mental health crisis at the time, we demand responses to people perceived to be in mental health crisis that do not involve armed police officers who take the lives of our loved ones. We demand investment in Black communities’ health and wellbeing, not more policing!
